I was wondering do you use some type of hearing protection when Varmit hunting?
I read somewhere the best one to use was (not sure of the name) Hatch that had a 31 decible cutoff, anyone know which one this is and where it can be found?

Mr Dawg.... I use hearing protection everytime I pull the trigger on a gun... Rifle, Shotgun, pistol... it don't matter. I have a pair of the relatively new Remington 2000 electronic ear muffs. I really like them cause, not only do they protect my heaing, but I can hear the RO (range officer) barking out orders. Additionally, if turned up, they also work as a "game ear". It's incredible how sensitive these things are. It's not worth taking the chance. I have a frined that lost most of the hearing in one ear shooting a 44 mag outside. He was devistated when it happend, cause all his life he wanted to work for the FBI... and his dream was crushed in a fraction of a second.

CD,I wear hear protection everytime I shoot or around shooting.I wear Plugs when just shooting teh 17 or 22's and wear teh Power muff when shooting the center Fires. When Hunting I have a Walker Game ear thatI wear in my left ear and a normal Sonic 2 plug in the right. I have tought both of my girls to wear plugs and the older style muffs when shooting or just out when we are all shooting.

Guys, all I got to say is nobody ever told me shooting would hurt you when you got older. >:(I only wish I knew at the time, because I was told by a doctor I lost 60 % of my hearing. :'(I don't like Walkers Game Ear because I think it's all a money making scam. Hey, I don't use camo either lol. ;)But if Walkers can protect your ears for your rifle cool, maybe you'll hear when your 60, ;)I can't.

Does anyone have a set of custom plugs that where made for your ears. I think I am going to try some. Waiting for the next gun show in Dallas during thanksgiving. I can't stand hunting with muffs and the plugs are starting to bother my ears. Even the expensive ones I have. I think the custom fit will be much mroe comfortable for extended wear.

A friend just got a set of these and they are pretty nice. Walker's Power Muff Quads The key to Walker's latest hearing protection and enhancement muffs is the use of four microphones--one mounted front and rear on each ear cup. They allow easy conversation at the range and enhanced ability to hear approaching game while in the field. Firearm blast noise is instantly reduced to a safe level. There are individual volume control knobs for each ear, and a frequency adjustment knob allows for personal tuning. The unit's noise reduction rating is 24 decibels, and maximum power output is 110 decibels. Suggested retail: $259. Walker Game Ear, 610/565-8952, www.walkersgameear.com
