I am looking at trail cams. The one I like best so far is the digital Camtrakker. I want to get it ordered soon, and was just wondering if anyone here has any first hand experience with one. Thanks for any suggestions. Bob

I set my camtrakker up yesterday on our CRP field. I cleared a patch in the snow, and threw corn and hay out. Only one muledeer doe found it, and I got lots of pics of her. The other deer and elk will find it soon. Bob

Hey BobR,
I got my first roll off my stealth cam this morning and we will see what kind of pictures there are tomorrow. I put it out a couple of weeks ago and I am already having to change out the batteries. I hope this was just a bad batch of batteries, otherwise between buying film and batteries this thing will be limited on how often it gets put in the field. I wanted to go the digital route, but it was just too much $$$$ at the time. Can't wait to see what kind of pictures you get to post.

captkb, This camera cost $750.00 plus shipping. I could have got a 35MM for $300.00 less, but this camera has rechargeable lead acid batteries, and I have two media cards that hold 500 pics each. The batteries last weeks. I can change media cards and batteries in minutes, always leaving the camera in the field. I have a card reader on my computer where I can look at, edit and delete photos. I will upload the keeper photos to my online webshots albums. I will empty the card and charge the battery for the next change out. It will not take long til I make that $300 back. This camera will be in the field until I wear it out. Iam learning the basics of aiming and setting it up. It will soon go to lion country with bait and an electronic teaser. I would love to see and hear about your pics. Bob

Well I got my first roll of film back today and was very disappointed. It seems I set it up too close to something the wind would move and it took almost a whole roll of film of just my feeder. I had one picture of me testing the camera, one picture of a fat raccoon heading towards the feeder and one picture of two hogs just outside the feeder pen but it was at night and looks to be real foggy and you can barely see them. I am going to make me a bracket up on a tee post for my camera to sit on, instead of using a tree. Maybe the next role will be better!?!?

captkb, I have learned a bunch on my first try. !.) Do not set the camera where it will be facing sun. 2.) In icy conditions set the cam, set the cam on a tree facing away from the direction the weather ic coming from.
I went up today, and the elk had been everywhere all out in front of my camera. My camera has a heat-in-motion sensor. The sensor was iced over. The cam did not take a single pic. I had it on a six inch wooden fence post right out in the weather. We have heavy freezing fog down low around our place right now. 1000 feet in elevation higher, and we have bight sunny weather and clear skies. Yesterday we went on a long 4-wheeler trip. It was cold (28 *)and foggy at the house. At 5,000feet, it was clear and sunny and 55*. I am moving my camera up to cat country in the morning. Bob

This is a photo I took yesterday evening as we were coming back down the mountain. That freezing fog is hanging around up to 2,800 feet in elevation. Every thing in the fog is covered with ice. I am moving my camera up in the morning. Bob

:)Hey CD.... get the camera.... it's a lot more fun and it will save your memories for a life time! When I go out on a hunt, my camera is with me. Sometimes it causes a brief conflict deciding which one to pick up and point! But you can end up with the pictures lie BobR has posted. And by the way BobR, thanks for the e-mail of those other pics. I still mainly shoot with my Olympus or Canon 35 mm SLR's; but a digital is coming real soon! Get a camera and enjoy the outdoors even more!

I am leaving my Camtrakker alone for a few days. It is in a good spot. But today I was down in a long deep drainage, following the deer and elk trails. I found them and know where to call now. I got some neat pics today, and learned a bunch about my digital camera. It is small and fits in my coat pocket. I hardly know that I have it with me. I discovered today, that I can put the camera to one of the eye pieces of my binos. I got some great loooong range pics. This was just an experiment, and I am pleasantly surprised at the results. I will be down in there with the elk and other critters now that I have finally located them. Should be able to get some good pics. I will upload some pics of elk and bears from past years. These are stills taken from camcorder tapes. The quality will be much better with the digital and my binos. I always have both with me any way, and I hate lugging that camcorder around. I will also upload pics from today to my Webshots albums. I will post a link here later tonight. It will take some time. Bob
