I'm home from deer camp for a few hours and thought I'd share this story......
Saturday was opening day of the Oklahoma "primitive firearms" deer season.....conditions on the first morning were poor with high winds and warm temps......a cold front came through Saturday afternoon bringing rain, so we elected to stay in camp Saturday evening......Sunday morning was perfect....the air cold and crisp with a light north wind. I made it to the stand well before first light, settled in and waited for shooting hours. At 7:40 I had plenty of light, so I broke out the rattling horns and grunt call.......I am fairly new to rattling and have only had good results a few times using this method.....so I didn't expect much......after the first rattling sequence, I hung the horns up and turned to watch the direction I figured the deer would come from......after about 5 minutes, I turned my head and saw this buck just 35 yards from me.......he was broadside but looking my direction.....I didn't even get excited because all I could think was "there is no way you will ever get a shot at this deer".......we had a stare down for what seemed like forever......I didn't move a muscle......he didn't know what, but he knew something wasn't right and he turned to leave.......when he did, I lifted my rifle out of my lap and moved it into shooting position......almost without thinking, I gave a bleat sound with my voice...... the buck stopped and turned to look back.....VERY BAD IDEA!......the smoke rolled and the buck trotted off....but only about 40 yards.......
He weighed 138 pounds dressed, has 8 points and an 18 1/2" inside spread......probably not too impressive for you Texicans......but he is definitely a shooter in these parts!!!
I'll be heading back to camp later today, as soon as I get a troublesome alternator fixed and deliver the deer to the processor......I still have a doe tag to fill! ;D
