I took bearmanric down the creek from our house yesterday afternoon to show him the area where the bears are every fall. There was two large boars down there last fall that survived the hunting season. I hiked up into the timber there in early October after we were finished bear hunting. I found a huge fir tree where the big boar had been bedding down during the day. Rick and I hiked up to that tree yesterday. It was the first time I had been there since October.
Bears in late fall are not eating berries and fruit any longer. They eat lots of vegetation just before denning up for winter. Their scat looks much different when eating grass and plant matter. Yesterday , we found lots of scat that was not there in October. The big boar had been hanging out at the tree just before denning up. I suspect he has a den very near that tree somewhere. The other large boar I saw last fall, was coming down the creek every evening. He was staying in some plum thickets in the day, and then coming down to the berries late each evening. Last week, I found a big tree just off our CRP field where a large bear had made a bed. I am certain this is where the other large boar had bedded down during the day. The tree is just uphill from the plum thickets.
Boars come out of their den much earlier than the sows around here. I have seen their tracks as early as February 16 in the snow. Both of the trees have beds dug out by the bears. The beds are full of debree right now (leaves, pine needles and tree limbs}. I am going to be watching these trees for signs of new bear activity.
When they come out of their dens, they will clean up their bedding areas.
I have also been scouting some very remote areas that had lots of bears in them last fall. These areas are not hunted because they are remote, down in deep canyons that are hard to get to.
We will be out in this country hunting elk sheds in about five weeks. I will see lots of bears and sign then. I ordered a pair of 10X25 binoculars that have a built in digital camera. I will get plenty of bear pics when out hunting sheds with those.
