I thought I would start a journal to share with everyone on my personal hunting adventures, aside from the hog hunts we run. This year seems like its going to be an odd yr so far. After letting out small crp pasture lease go west of Bradshaw, I really didn't think we would find a lease this yr. Well after doing a little checking around we came across a small lease, but the landowner doesn't allow any deer hunting - only hogs and varmints. For the price the three of us decide to take it and see what could be done. The three of us loved hunting hogs and figured this would allow us to get our foot in the door for other places in the area. It has opened a few more doors for hunting, but none so far for deer. Right now thats fine with us - we have learned patience comes in handy when looking for a good hunting lease.

I decide to take my 4 yr old son (Parker) out with me this morning just to see how the hogs were doing and maybe get lucky enough to see some deer. May not be able to hunt them, but we still have a good time watching them. Surprisingly when the alarm went off at 4:00 am Parker got up and got ready to go. I somewhat expected him to sleep in. Off we go and we get settled into the blind about 30 minutes before first light. The tempature was a little too high to be considered "good hunting" weather and that West Texas wind out of the north was about 15 mph too much, but inside my insulated blind we were comfortable. About 10 minutes before light Parker informs me that them chocolate donuts are not doing him any good sitting on the shelf next to me. I open them for him and he is once again happy go lucky. Right after first light my feeder goes off and Parker wants to know who walked down there and pushed the button for it to go off. It took me awhile but I convienced him no one walked down there pushed the button. All he had seen before was when we would fill the feeders up and test them. The rest of the morning we was swapping MY binos back and forth looking for hogs or deer. He got made at me because I forgot to pack his binos in the backpack. Its quiet for a good while and he looks at me and ask "When are you going back to that store to by me that rifle?" A few days ago we had looked at one of those Crickett .22 rifles and he had a fit to have one. Well I gave him the speech that we needed to do some more work on educating him on how to handle a firearm safely. That went over like a turd in a punch bowl. I played it off as best as I could, but he wasn't having any of it. I couldn't buy him the rifle that we looked at because my Dad had already bought him one a yr ago. We were just waiting for him to get a little bigger so that he could handle it. Well we end up leaving the lease around 10:00 that morning and stopped off at the landowners house and then headed home. Several times on the way home he mentioned stopping and buying the rifle that we looked at. We get home and take a much needed nap and he is back after me to go buy that rifle. We go by my parents house that evening and he tells them all about going hunting that morning and that he didn't have a rifle to take with him. ;D ;D My Dad couldn't stand it anymore and went inside and brought the Crickett .22 rifle and gave it to Parker. He looks it over and dances a happy jig and then he realizes something is missing........"Where's MY bullets?" ;D ;D We all laughed and I had to explain to him that we already had bullets for it and they were at home. He was cool with that and went back to looking his new rifle over. We may have a monster on our hands, but I wouldn't want it any other way!! ;D
