I got a phone call this past Sat. evening on a couple of guys wanting to go out and shoot a hog or two. Well we loaded up and got an early start Sunday morning (4:45) and pulled in to the place just before 6:00. It was calm and peaceful once we settled everyone into the blinds. Not 15 minutes go by and one lone coyote starts to bark and howl. Within 5 more minutes it sounded like the entire country side had filled up with coyotes and all were howling and yipping away. In all honesty it was cool as hell!!! At day break I noticed one lone boar at a feeder way across the pasture. It was the only place we didn't have a hunter set up - go figure. In the past we had seen them leave that feeder and be line it for the feeder I was at, but not that day. Instead they went to the third feeder where we had our other hunter set up. After what seemed an eternity on deciding if it was a meat or trophy hog the guys tell him to shoot. BOOOOOM............WHOOOOP!!!! An obvious hit and after a look in the binos we comfirmed by Richard's reaction that our first hog had been taken. We decide to walk over to see what he had and as we approach its clear this hog hasn't given up just quite yet. The first shot from his .270 passed right thru the lungs and come to find out it didn't knock the hog down. They slowly walked to within 15 yds and the hog turned and acted as if he wanted to charge. NOT!!! The second shot was right between the eyes. We had one 175 lb hog on the ground, one overwhelmed and excited hunter, and three guides that couldn't have been happier. We took some pictures (once I get them developed I will post them) and then got him gutted, skinned and quartered for their trip back home to New Mexico. I recall Richard saying something about having a new respect for hogs after shooting one and seeing it just stand there and take the shot. But he also stated that he was hooked and would be back for more. We can't wait for Richard, David and Gina to come back and take a few more hogs back to New Mexico. Next time Gina, don't forget to bring your bow!

Sounds pretty much like a good time was had by all except the hog ;D.
I've seen hogs that a shot from a 300 winny and do the same thing or go down and take off running. This is why I believe in a side arm for back up in case of a charge.

Funny you should mention that CoonDawg. I heard today that a guy shot one with a .300 ultra mag thru the heart and lungs and it didn't go down. It did the drunken walk for about 20 yds and stood there only to receive a second shot right behind the ear.
One thing is for sure about these wild hogs..............They are one tough animal!!!
The guy with us on Sunday was carrying a sidearm, but in this situation he had plenty of time to use the rifle.

I was over at the Bow shop and guys were talking about hogs and one mentioned a friend had shot a hog, he went down but was still kicking. So he got the guides 40 cal to finish him off well the hog had a different idea and CHARGED HIM!!!!!!! Ten rounds later the hog was down for the count ;D. This was caught on tape too, still waiting to see it.
