This weekend, 1st cav sgt ret (Ed) hunted hogs with us. This was a typical West Texas weekend as far as the weather. Going into the weekend the weatherman said saturday was going to be warm but calm - LIAR!! Well to be honest he was only a half LIAR - it was pretty warm, but the wind blew like crazy. We got into the stand saturday morning just in time to have quite a few coyotes sound off. A couple were within 200 yds of the blind. We put Ed in the big tower blind so he could have a good view of the place. The evening before we put out about 15 lbs of jelloed corn at each feeder and at daybreak we noticed it was already gone. Night feeding little %@^%$^$. This place a 6 cows on the place and I noticed one cow was off by herself close to the stand I sat in. I told one of the other guides that she either had her calf last night or was fixing to. Every so often I would look her way just to see if we could see a calf with her. About 8:30 I noticed her making a run up one of the draws that feeds the stock tank - ahead of her about 30 yds was a coyote and then another. We watched as every 10 minutes or so she would make a run at them and chase them off, only to have them return back. We hollared at Ed on the radio and asked if he wanted to see if we could call them in and let him get a shot at them. He was willing and made his way over to our blind. We set up at the edge of the tank in some willow trees and i hit the e-caller with canine pups tape. With in a couple of minutes here they come down the draw but not out in the open enough for a shot. Just as we thought they would hit the opening the momma cow would make a run at them and push them back up the draw. Ed almost got a shot off at one of them but held back hoping they would come in closer. They never did, so me and Ed swung around behind them trying to ease up on them for a shot. It didn't work, but we did find out why them yotes kept hanging around. They had killed a calf the night before and was trying to get back to it. From the looks of things they had the calf as soon as it hit the ground. We head out and rest a bit and have lunch and head back to the stand around 3 pm. Ed goes back to the tower stand and Johnny and myself go back to the stand we were in that morning hoping to catch them yotes coming back. We didn't catch them coming back, because they were already there. Since it was still early evening I set up and took a shot at one. Clean miss but it was enough of a scare that they didn't come back til after dark. Ed noticed movement to his NE up close to the fence line - a buck! Keep in mind we can't hunt deer on this place. I catch a glimpse of him going behind some trees, but Johnny got a descent look and said he was pretty wide and looked nice. Ed said the samething about him after watching him 5 minutes or so. This all took place the last 15 minutes or so of light. Again no hogs came into the feeders. We got out of the stands and let the wind blow us back to the trucks. Man the wind was horrible.
This morning the wind had changed directions but really didn't slow down any. It was alot colder and we thought with the front here the hogs would show up and feed. They never showed. We hung with it as long as we could, but Ed said he had to head back home. We shook hands and he was back in his truck and on his way home. We were disappointed that there was no hog meat in the back of Ed's truck, but after thinking about it the weekend was still pretty good. Ed is a super nice guy is welcome to hunt with us anytime. We enjoyed having him out and look forward to then next time we meet up. I thinking we may invest in a couple of motion lights to set up on the feeders to catch these night feeding little $@#^%$#'s.
