One of my favorite animals to hunt is the free-range blackbuck antelope. They were introduced in the Edwards Plateau region of Texas in about 1930. Today there are more in Texas than their native India and Pakistan. The last census estimated the herd at around 25,000 animals. These are just the free-ranging ones, not the ones behind high fences. They are also very good table fare! I get to hunt them on a friend's ranch near Camp Wood, TX. I also guide a very few hunts on the ranch each year. GonHuntin' went with me on one of these hunts last year and took a very nice buck with his Contender at about 156 yards. The shots average 150-300 yards. They are very wary and seldom stand still for more than a few seconds at a time. Bob Here is one I took and the one GonHuntin' took:

mountainman, The fall and winter are probably the best time to hunt them. Their coats get the darker black color phase at this time of the year. I am guiding 2 hunters from Houston on the ranch this Sunday. I will post the pics from the hunt so you can see them.........I hope. These hunts are only $600-a $100 daily rate and a $500 trophy fee when you take your buck. You are also allowed to take does for $100......and boy are they good eating. Here is a photo of one of the does I took for the freezer last year with my 22-250. There is not a lot of meat, but what there is tastes great! The hunt I guide is listed in the "Hunts Available" forum. I only do a few each year as new bucks move onto the ranch and take over does. This is a 4100 acre working, low-fenced sheep and cattle ranch. Bob

jdickey,
Great photo! ;D;D;D
There seems to be a lot more of them moving into that area in Tom Green and Coke Counties. I hope you end up with some on your lease.......
I have seen them in three spots, two spots near Water Valley and one between San Angelo and Robert Lee.
They are a spectacular antelope!

Oh man oh man, I sure wanna go after one if these soon. How many do you guys think there are free ranging around Texas??? I know alot of the ranches down south lost a whole bunch of animals a couple years ago during all the rains and flood. Just curious.

Aggie,
TPWD's last census estimated about 25,000 were free-ranging.

I can only imagine sitting in a deer stand and seein one sneakin thru if you had never seen one before!! If that happened to me, I would leave teethmarks on the deerstand seat! Worse case of buck-type fever ever....
