Yes, Crime There are enough places to go and get a helping hand from that stealing an animal from someones land or taking one off of the side of the roadway is not necessary. My belief is that in most cases the person is just claiming that they need it to feed their family is just an excuse because they have been caught. I personally would work anywhere(and have done so) and do about anything legal to provide for my family and there are a lot of options out there for people willing to do the same.

I think that anyone can get a job, it might not be the one they want, it might not pay the best, but you can get a job. We have people coming into the US in mass numbers to do the jobs that us American's do not want.
Now I do understand doing whatever it takes to care for your family. I would do the same. Yet how much did that rifle and ammo cost the guy? Could he have sold it for money to buy food? What kind of vehicle did he drive? There are too many variables to make an educated decision on this.
Yet when I was a sheriff I had some experience with poachers and people honestly taking game for food. Yet everyone that was providing for their family were taking non-game animals. The were mainly shooting rabbits and the such. When it come to starvation anything is good. I myself have shot and cooked up rabbits and in my opinion they are great if prepared correctly.

Tough call, but from a LEO standpoint you can't bend the law to fit your needs. I still say NO WAY to poaching.

Thats a tough question with no right answer. Around here its such a rural area that everyone knows the people who are really trying and could use a little help and those who are perpetually lazy and just wont work. If a guy were to come to me and I knew that he was trying and just needed a little help I'd probably need to be in town for a little bit and if someone just happened to poach an antelope or deer while I was gone, well, thats just the way it goes.

Poaching is poaching and it is a crime. I am from a poor family and understand trying to feed the family but I think it needs to be done within the law. A family of two can take 10 deer in a lot of counties in Texas and I know that will cost something but with all the doe management hunts, it could be done on most anybodys budget if you just worked at it. Whew! Whats that box under my feet?

I agree poaching is against the law.Being unemployed for 2 weeks is not the right answer.Being an ex-police I agree with Bozo a crime is a crime.

Kelly
With the cost of deer hunting in Texas.....how can anyone afford to legally kill a deer if they really need it to feed their family?
As for poaching......if killing a game animal illegally was the only way I had to put food on the table......then I would consider it survival....not poaching.......and I wouldn't hesitate for a moment.....but I'd probably be more inclined to pick up a freshly road killed deer! ;D
Don't laugh......you won't see road kill in most parts of Africa...... because they pick it up and eat it!

My first thoughts were yes its a crime, but then I've been in the guys shoe (not both feet just one ;D). Yes I was out of work, couldn't get help from agencies that are suppose to help . No income and out of work total of 6 months with little ones. Now you see people standing on coners with signs asking for money, try being out there with one asking for a job . CDL driver with experience looking for job, willing to work for min wage 4-5 days a week while people just look at you. Yes I felt desparate and thought of all kind of things to do to get money,no I didn't do any of them. You do feel like doing them.

GH, I'm with ya 100% when it comes to taking care of the family!! I just don't think I would do such a bad job of such to be forced to take deer illegally. Less than 12 years ago I was staying with friends because I was unable to work due to an accident that put me in the hospital for 80 days and my only income was food stamps so I know what its like to be in need.

There are other ways to get food to feed your family. Call any game warden and ask for confiscated deer. Usually, when I have a confiscated deer, it's hard to get rid of. Granted, it's usually 2:00 a.m. and the meat isn't cut up and packaged but if my family was hungry I believe I could get up and do a little kitchen table processing. There's also the "hunters for the hungry" program. In reality, most people caught poaching deer have a cooler full of beer and a nice rifle. Just my $.02 worth.

It goes either way is it bad to steal bread to feed your family. Who knows thats for the courts to decide. I wouldn't mind if he really needed the meat and shot a doe with his 30 year old rifle and loaded it in the back of his rusted out old pickup. Its when hes got all the new goodies and shoots a buck or somthing to feed his family.

Was gonna stay outta this one but gotta go with GH. If we knew the whole story, and the guy was desparate to feed his family then I would be hard pressed to consider it poachin. Got a family member right now that is not of the right class, level, height, weight or whatever to get much help from the agencies. Thankfully she has us to lean on right now but I sure wouldnt hold it against her if she didnt have us and went out and put meat on the table. Will agree its a very tough call in most situations.
