Well decided that I would go to a new place on Wed and try for a coyote or two. This ranch is new to me and I am still finding new places to call from. The first call of the day right at daylight and not a thing, not even the howling that usually follows during the first call. I head off checking some of the lease roads and run across a pond between two pipeline right-a-ways. I set the FoxPro up at about 30 yards upwind and start the cottontail blues. Coyote #1 shows up from the east in less than a min and looks at me and at the call, runs over to the call and I deck him right in front of it. Well that happened fast so just left the call going to see if another would show up. At the 10 min mark coyote #2 comes in from the east again runs to within 10 ft of the caller looks at the dead coyote and I nail her. Well a double so far things are looking up, coyote #3 shows up at the fifteen min mark coming in from the north and I pop it at 50 yard. This is only the second time I have taken 3 dogs on one call what a rush!! Well after the pictures I head off to do some more exploring and about 300 yards from where I shot the three dogs another coyote is standing and looking toward the pond so I go down about a half mile cut back in and set up. Well that dog does not show up, but right behind me I here the sound of a coyote in full reverse, I jump up and never did see it, very thick brush at this spot. I did find the tracks where it made it's getaway. Well I have time for one more call so head off to a windmill and set up the caller at the 30 yard mark upwind and fire off the FoxPro and a coyote shows up in about 10 sec I just barely got my gun on the shootin sticks. Well I drop that one right at the call and just keep on calling. I get some movement just to the right of me and a coyote is standing about 15 ft away from me looking at the dog that I had down, it sees me move and here it comes, he thinks that he has the biggest rabbit he ever saw!! Well things go downhill from there I turn and he figures it out and I never could get on him as he streaked out. Was the best day I have had this year!

bogloss, Sounds like a great action packed day of calling. When we were out that way we ran out of video tapes and the Alco in Kermit saved our hides. It was like an Oasis in the desert. Great looking country around Kermit. Its funny how hunting tactics change in different area. Around home we look for open areas adjacent to creek beds or heavy cover. Out west it seems windmills are a hot spot. Water is gold out that way. txpred

Bog Person: We are over here in Midland, and was wondering if the NM hunting was open range or is it a permission thing on private land like Texas? We are just looking to find some yotes.

Hey Mark,
I am not the "Bog Person" ;D, but I will chime in. New Mexico, like most western States (except Texas) has a lot of State and Federal land you can hunt. Get yourself a "New Mexico Atlas & Gazetteer". It has plat maps and the State and Federal lands are marked.
It never hurts to have access to private land though.
Good Hunting,
Bob

Well this is the Bog-loss person and MarkA you should not have any trouble hunting in NM. I have been hunting over there the last 10 yrs and it is great. If I were you I would get some BLM maps of the areas that you want to hunt and just stick to the yellow squares!! There is a BLM office in Hobbs and also in Carlsbad. The maps are pretty good but do not show all the roads and they are drilling new sites all the time. If you head that way the licence will cost you 45.00 for a non-game and if you like to hunt birds get a small game it is 75.00. You will also have to get a BLM stamp to hunt with them and it is 5.00. The only problem with the lic is it will exspire the last day of March.
Living in Midland I would get the Jal and Calsbad and maybe the Artesia area maps. The maps I think cost around 7.50 each but you cannot hunt without them. Good Hunting

Ole Boggy, Ole buddy, question that I am sure you answered but you know the dummies on the net (opps, that would be me) do you get get the maps from BLM, also, do you have to go to that office or can be ordered from the net, or other place. We have a Topographic Survey outfit here that has lots of maps, will check and see if they do the BLM thing. The license is through BLM also? Gotta go to their office?
