jdickey, I guess I shouldn't tell CD that the Makarov only shoots 95gr. bullets........then he really will get on you! All kidding aside, they are a great pistol. I had a Bulgarian Mak that was a real shooter..........I wish I didn't have to sell it. I will get another one though. Bob

I'm pretty sure mine is Russian made... (although it says made in Russia in English!) It even had a goat skin holster that smelled like a goat! I was interested in this gun because these were Russian Army Officer issue! All metal and almost indestructible! But loud! And Bob, you're right it is 95gr. Neat ammunition!

Hey Allen,
I am sure looking forward to seeing some field reports from you on the 500 S&W. Do you know when they are going to start shipping?

Got plenty of them. All flavors. I usually carry a .357 revolver with six inch barrel. Most of the time it has three hollow points and three snake shot. I hate rattlesnakes.

Bob they have been shipping them for months. They have about a 10,000 piece back order. Have a friend that works for S&W as a revolver test shooter. He says they have put on another shift and started working 6 days a week starting about 3 weeks ago. They are putting out about 700 of the 500's a week now so it should not be long. Hopefully by Christmas anyway. I've already purchesed dies, brass and bullets and have 100 rounds of the 440 grain cast bullet loaded with H110 starting at 37 grains and going up to 41 grains. Boy that's going to be fun.

It depends on the situation and how much I feel threatened and the area,if hunting deer/hogs/yotes it would be s/w28 357 or s/w57 41 both with HOT handloads,if its 2legged skunks and snakes 1911 colt gov issue with winfactory loads cause its one that I know works all the time and every time

I might as well jump in here too. On duty I carry a Kimber Custom Combat, 45acp of course. Off duty I carry a Kimber Combat alumnum also 45acp. And for some unkonwn reason I will carry a Smith and Wesson 625-2 in 45 acp. when I go hunting. Proberly just so I could buy another pistol. 9mm, why carry a round that lost two world wars? Just kidding, I really don't want to start that argument. ;D

I carry a Glock model 22 in 40 S&W. I have used it in IDPA and have been pleasantly surprised by the accuracy. I won't get into all the talk about how good or bad the 40 S&W round is, but I have put thousands of rounds through it and have not had a single malfunction. I have shot almost all the factory loads out there and have settled with the Winchester USA 180 gr for plinking and the Winchester 180 gr SXT's when I'm out hunting. I carry a handgun while hunting coyotes for those up close and personal encounters. I've only had one so far, a coyote ran 10 feet in front of me on his way to my caller and turned back and ran by me close enough to reach out and grab him. I didn't have a handgun with me on that trip, if I had my Glock I could have had 2 chances to take him. I've had it at my side on every hunt since then.

jd,
If you are sitting side saddle and you shoot that .500 it's gonna blow you right off of that horse. Stick to your 9mm.

My 2 cents on handguns for backup goes like this- If you have it for when the 'fit hits the shan' it better be plenty big enough! I love my Kimber .45 but wouldn't take it as backup when pig hunting because of a hairy experience I had once. Long story short-a 230gr. 45ACP round shot to the forehead of a charging hog will just leave a real nice divet in the head of the pig!! 5 nice ones to be precise! That changed my attitude a lot because I realized that when you go to backup no shot is guaranteed!
I've heard that hogs can be killed by a .22 when shot behind the ear, but they don't charge sideways! Anyway my personal preference would be no less than .357, .44mag being best. Also, don't be fooled into buying *factory* hollow points for .44's either! Elmer Keith had it right-a hard cast flat point takes the wind right out of 'em. If you like to reload then some options really open up!

Hey pyledriver if that would have been a Colt 45 instead of a Kimber you would have been alright ;D Everybody knows that God created man and Col Sam Colt made them equal all kidding aside were you using hardball ammo? Try loading some 300 grainers up they should do the trick.

Hey Coondawg! Yes, it was hardball ammo. I've never tried the heavy stuff before but maybe I will sometime in the future. It was quite a hair raising experience since my buddy and I were new to hog hunting and found out that sows get really p.o.'d when you shoot them with piglets around! I've hunted hogs for 15 years now and during that time I've seen and heard enough that I give them mucho respect. I've had many wild experiences, some funny and others that make me glad I had clean underwear back at camp! ;D
