:oHOW ABOUT .50 CAL 209 MUZZLELOADER WITH .300 GRAIN BARNES EXPRESS, LOADED WITH 3 50GRAIN HODGMAN PELLETS! IT WILL SHOOT ACCURATELY FOR 300 YARDS; I KNOW IT WILL KILL AN ELK AT 142 YARDS! ;D

In Texas, and in my books anywhere on the North American continent the 30-06 is all you need. If I felt I needed more,it would not be a faster .30 cal---if you can already shoot through them, why increase velocity ---to shoot even further through them? I'd go to larger cal and most likely the .35 Whelen.

The venerable 30.06 has my vote too.
I have an older version of Texpppr's - the 742 (bought it 1974), that I dearly love. Very versatile rifle that I can hunt a lot of things with -
I do not reload and there are a very wide range of ballistics available for this caliber off the shelf.

Hi from Canada,
If I hunted in TX for deer only, I'd go with the 6.5mm-06, in a Sendero m700 style, 26" barrel. 125 gr. Partitions @ 3100 fps. 4-12 or 5-15 power scope.
If I also would hunt big hogs and exotics, I'd go with a 7mm Mag w/ 175 gr. A-Frames @ 2900 fps. Sporter weight, 26" barrel. 3-9 or 4-12 power scope.

I first got my 300 Win. Mag 4yrs. ago(the first rifle that I have purchased) and wasn't sure that I would like using it after putting several rounds through her. I have since taken 8 animals with her and am very pleased. I am currently looking to expand my armory possibly with a 223 Bushmaster.

Gents, Those of you who endorse the .30-06 are absolutely right in your minds about the subject of appropriate power, unless were taking about shooting at distance. Earlier this year I had a truly extraordinary .300 WSM custom affair completed and quickly found it that it would go toe-to-toe with just about any benchrest rifle I've seen in action. However, I have no illusions about the fact that it's really way too much power for medium or even most large game at distances to which hunters typically reach to kill a game animal. But at over 600 yards, the speed of its most accurate load (Lapua 167-grain Scenar in front of 64.5 grains of VV N550) has dropped over 1000 fps, rendering it 'appropriate power' rather than overkill. The problem with such rifles lies in the fact that a man must face the question of whether it is honorable to take such a rifle afield and use it in that invariably occuring instance where a deer or hog comes out of the bush only 100 yards away.
