My "Go To Rifle" is a Remington 700 LSS in 7mm Rem Magnum. Often I'll hunt a blind that has very short range shots, and then I'll break out my Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. The wife uses a 25-06.

BigJ: Your absolutely going to love it. I'm using the new PMC 45-70 +P+ (Stock #4570HA). It's a very hot load, and pushes a 350 gr. Hornady flat point at around 2050 fps (22-in bbl.). PMC advised that it's safe to shoot in the new Marlin 1895's and Ruger #1's. It's a sledgehammer of a load for deer and hogs. I was able to get a 1.1-inch group with it from my Guide Gun/Leupold rig. Lever action rifles are not supposed to be this accurate. Good luck with yours.

I wasn't aware that Marlin made an 1895 with a 26-inch barrel. Wow! That's a whole bunch of barrel.

Curious, what does that marlin 45/70 run at the gun store?

If your paying over $430 for a Marlin Guide Gun (Blued), your paying too much. I recently took a look at a flyer that my dealer had, and he was able to buy them for $349 + Shipping, if my memory serves me right.
You might take a look at GunsAmerica.com, and see what they are selling for there. That should give you a reasonable idea. Good luck.

30-06 in a Browning BAR here, old Belgian built one. I am really surprised at the number of 30-06 shooters out there!! My local gunshop calls me everytime a 30-06 shows up wanting me to come and look at it. Seems 30-06 he has trouble selling!! I have seen this also at gunshows, almost no interest in them. This year I am hunting whitetails with a 300 Savage in a little custon Mauser I bought at a local pawnshoppe for a song. I have fell in love with that little rifle, it is an absolute pleasure to shoot!! Coz

Got to go with my 742 30-06 first and take the ruger tang safety 77 in 6mm as a back up. I'd feel confident with either for any deer I've ever seen in Texas, and the 06 for any exotic or hog around. I've seen some large elk dropped in a heartbeat with a 30-06. JMHO

I prefer the 7mm to any other bullet. I will go after anything in the lower 48 with my Browning A-Bolt in .280 caliber. I like to use the Hornady 139gr SpirePoint for deer and hogs. If I was to go after elk or moose it would be the 160gr Hornady Partition.

My choice is the .270 Winchester. All the choices mentioned are good IMO, but if small Hill Country deer are on the menu, the .300 and up are way overkill. I saw three Hill Country deer shot in one day that needed a follow-up shot after being shot well by the .300 Weatherby. Just too much gun for close in shooting.

Just goes to show you that each shot is an event unto itself - Two years ago, I shot a 130 pound buck with my 300 Weatherby Mag at about 80 yards or so. He went down in a heap; probably dead before he hit the ground. Exit wound was big enough to fit a baseball in. The trauma on the inside was pretty evident ... I walked away thinking I had too much gun for the occasion......

Well my goto would be my 700 based custom .280AI I shoot left handed so my choice of factory rifles is limited at best. Second choice would be the 700 in .270, of course I could go with the 7mm or the 25-06 or the 7mm08 or the .257 or the.... Heck I like em all. Drop
