I would have to say as my nick-name implies, my go-to rifle would have to be a .300 mag of some variety. .300 Mags are like pretty ladies, they are all good; just some better than others, right?!?!
My personal go-to rifle the last couple of years has been a custom.300 RUM that shoots like a house of fire. I am currently working on a .300 WSM. If I had to pick one, and just one, it would probably be the .300 H&H.
Best regards,

It'd be either my 7mm Rem Mag M70 or my .300 Weatherby Mag Vanguard.
I'm very fond of the good old .30-06 and have a lovely Ruger M77 that I've had for 20 years and have a sentimental attachment to, but I've never been able to get it to group much better than buckshot patterns.
Actually, I've found a load it likes. Yesterday I shot a 20 round 100 yard group I could cover with my hand!
Guess it's time to get serious about troubleshooting it. It's never had the factory bedding modified, and I suspect that's the root of the problem. It also has quite a long throat, but so does the Weatherby and I've shot lots of sub-1" groups with it. The bore's slick and shiny and tight patches glide through it. Right now I'm taking a break from scrubbing copper out of the Weatherby and the Winchester, which have much rougher bore finishes and copper up pretty badly though they shoot mighty well in spite of it. When I get done with them, I think I'm going to pull the Ruger out of its stock (which I've never done) and take a look at it.

I've read a lot of replies to this thread, and probably any of the mentioned choices would work. So, I'll pick my favorite "Texas-Sized" caliber that I would pick. The 260 is my choice. Load it down for the little vermin and load it up with the 140's for the porkers. I dearly do like that 6.5 caliber. I have had a 264 win mag since about 1966, and now have a 6.5 STW, and a couple of 260's. I have shot elk with the 264 win mag and got along fine. I have also shot deer "way out there" with the 6.5 STW......but the 260 is GREAT....

I'll use a 308 Win. in a Win 88M, sure wish they would start making the 88M in 300WSM or 7WSM. Also use 45-70 Marlin Guide 330 gr. cast HP. Eat right up to the bullet hole almost.

OKCoyote.... The 6.5 STW is just the 7 STW necked down. Just personal preference, I guess, but I like the 6.5 bullets a little better than the 7's. It's a little picky about powder selection, but once I got it figured out, it works good. It will drop about 6-8 inches less than son's 7 STW at 500 yards. That's with the 140 grain bullets. Nothing wrong with the 7 tho, son took his buck this last fall at 620 yards...one shot...DRT.

If I was limited to one rifle to hunt Texas with, it would be my custom Siamese Mauser in .45-70. However, I'm glad that the onliest limitation on gun selection when I visit Texas is the number of guns I can get in my cab-and-a-half Chevy pickumup. Last trip the luggage rode in the bed of the truck so I could get more guns and ammo in (the wife really liked that :-) Thankfully, it didn't rain on the trip or I would have really caught it from the wife.

Everything in or around our state has been or will be killed by a .243 It is the perfect all around calliber in my opinion(which may not be worth much). Great ballistics and can be loaded for big game or varmint. well there's my two cents worth..thanks
