Why shoot a cannon. I have hunted Texas for the last 38 years and my choice is a 25-06 Remington.. Plenty big enough and flat shooting.

Now thats a lot of gun. I had though to buy one that size but couldn't think of anything to hunt with it that I already didn't have covered with the 3006. Are you going to Alaska for big brown bear?

one of the very good things about larger cals is they use bulletmass to kill with as opposed to high vel(however you have to get closer)for instance my 35gibbs on deer with a 225gr bullet which is of much heaver construction than a 30cal 150gr,I can shoot thru both shoulders and not tear them up(bloodshot meat)and anchors them on the spot, you can also download them to suit the animal hunted or run them full up

i shot a .300 win. mag for 18 years, i love this gun and cant think of a better caliber for anything from coyotes to brown bears. although i have never shot a brown bear, with the right load i wouldnt be afraid to. last year i bought a tc encore in .280 remington and i like it, so far i have killed 3 coyotes, 1 bobcat, 2 deer, and many many coke cans all with very good results. i think the best caliber is the one you shoot the best and the one you have the most confidence in. shot placement is EVERYTHING no questions asked. Hey Sarge,
I was wondering when someone would bring up the velocity vs. bullet-mass issue. Both are valid, both kill animals effectively, both are fun!! How many years did Jack O'Connor and Elmer Keith go back and forth on this one? ;D
Bob
I still like my 7mm-08 for Texas........

hey bobcat that debate will rage well after Im gone(and so will this one)I dont know if there is one calber that is the best ,just a good reason to have a well rounded battery to choose from(opening another can of worms)or another good reason to buy another gun ;D ;D

ok Gang, I have not jumped in here until now ok the only Caliber you need for TEXAS is a 300 Win.mag. you can take anything that walks with it.
you can down load it for small Hill country Deer or load it for the big So.TexasHogs.
I would say that the 300 is the Best IMHO

If it breaths in Texas. A 25-06 will stop it faster than any caliber I have ever used.

This is tough! I hunt in East Texas as well as west and south on occassion. If I had to just use one it would be my 300 Weatherby. I know some may think that is over kill but I have seen some wild hogs that are huge. My biggest one to date is 385lbs. I am glad I had the 300 instead of the 6mm I usually taked with me.

O.K. you make a very good point about those HAWGS ;D, some will run off when hit with anything. The old saying goes "Don't take a gun for when everything goes right Take one for when everything goes wrong
